Why Is Flow Measurement Important?

When looking at the overall costs of a typical compressed air system, the biggest costs are caused by the electrical power consumption but not by the investment or maintenance of the system.

There is another important issue: The industry accounts for 40% of the total CO2 emission. This CO2 emission comes from the combustion of fossil fuel (coal, oil, gas) in order to produce electrical power. As we all know, CO2 is responsible for the global warming. In times when energy is a scarce resource and environmental protection is an issue for all of us, flow measurement helps to analyze your systems in terms of consumption and leak detection and enables to reduce the energy consumption and cost.

Instrumentation manufactures have developed various flow measurement systems. Not all of them are same suitable for the application in compressed air. Ones is using the thermal mass flow principle, which measures standard volumetric flow independent of pressure and temperature over a wide measuring range. For most commercial applications in gas - thermal mass flow is the proper choice as it provides the best price to performance ratio. The installation of the flow meters can be done easily and quickly. A special advantage is the removable measuring device. The measuring device can be demounted quickly and easily for calibration purposes without removing the complete measuring section. Due to the compact design of flow sensor it is possible to monitor all compressed air systems from the compressor to the smallest compressed air tool (DN 15 to DN 50) in terms of flow rate and consumption.

Compressed air system too often lack of transparency in terms of performance, costs and efficiency. Roughly 60,000 plants are in use in Germany. Although compressed air is the most expensive energy form, industrial corporations consume up to 40 % more of it than really necessary. Many plants are not adapted to the actual requirements or are in need of repair.

Saving energy is a key to reduction of green house gases and a healthy future. Besides it comes with huge saving in costs making the production more competitive in the global business world.

The costs of compressed air can be split into the investment of equipment (compressor, dryer, etc.), the cost of maintenance and the cost of energy. Energy contributes the most to the overall costs and provides the biggest opportunity for savings.
